Papa Waʻa Voyage 2020 Fundraiser

Kainoa Hayes, Waʻa Haumana

November 22 2019

My name is Kainoa Hayes, I am a 9th grader at Hālau Kū Māna NCPCS (HKM), which is a Hawaiian-focused public charter school located in Makiki Valley, serving grades 4-12. HKM delivers curriculum that is standards-based, integrated with cultural and ‘āina-focused knowledge, and empowers students to affect positive change within their communities.

In my class, we focus on Hawaiian voyaging. In partnership with Kānehūnāmoku Voyaging Academy, a not-for-profit educational organization, we learn the rich history of Hawaii’s voyaging past and present. We train throughout the year on a 29-foot double hulled sailing canoe called Kānehūnāmoku, learning important concepts like teamwork, communication, and leadership through hands-on application. This year I am most excited about voyaging and hoʻokele (navigating). As part of our “hoʻike” or cumulative test of skills learned, our class embarks on a 5-day voyage within Kāneʻohe Bay. On this sail, we have the opportunity to put all our learning to test and create a community on the ocean. It’s through experiences like this that help us begin their high school journey and make a course plan for their future. We hope this voyage allows us the opportunity to find our place in the world and make headway on our future goals and aspirations.
